The meeting was difficult at times, with two full-time officers from the Student Union, but in the end I believe we had a frank and constructive discussion. We talked about ways to engage and listen, and I realised that the protesters felt they were not being heard. We also discussed the University’s investments, our plans to provide scholarships to Palestinian students, and support for academics from Gaza and universities in Gaza, among other issues. We agreed on the need to continue the conversation, and on a number of actions from both sides. I look forward to working with the students to ensure that our new scholarship programme for Palestinian students is shaped in the most effective way possible, targeting students from Gaza in particular.

PoC-PaN : On September 19, 2024, a deputy wrote: president The University to the University community. Regarding the conflict between Israel and Gaza and Palestine, she said: As many of you have seen, the protest camp left the library grounds in July. Over the summer, we engaged in regular and constructive dialogue with representatives of the camp on a range of issues, including scholarships for Palestinian students. As a result of these conversations, we also published more detailed information about where the University invests its money than we have to date, and as I mentioned before, we established a board-level body to review our current socially responsible investment policy. We expect to continue meetings with representatives of the protest group. We cannot know what the coming months will bring regarding the ongoing war, which continues to see horrific loss of life, devastating trauma, and the destruction of homes and livelihoods for people in the conflict zone.

PoC-PaN: Message from Deputy president University Professor Sacha Rosenell to Students on Israel and Gaza 23 November 2023: Dear Student, As the conflict in Israel and Gaza continues, and its repercussions are being felt across the UK, including in Sussex, I am writing to share some important information. The University knows that this is a very distressing time for many in our community. I want to reassure you that our top priority is to keep all students safe and to ensure that you feel safe and secure on campus. For this reason, we will not tolerate antisemitism, Islamophobia or any form of racism, harassment or discrimination. I want to stress that this zero-tolerance approach extends to social media activity. Please be aware that there may be serious consequences for anyone posting on social media about other students, or about the situation in Israel and Gaza/Palestine, that goes beyond the legal bounds or breaches University regulations. For example, expressing support for Hamas or other proscribed terrorist organisations, such as Hezbollah, is illegal under UK counter-terrorism legislation, and the University is very clear that we will take action under our regulations where students engage in harassing or threatening behaviour towards other students or staff, on social media or in person.
